TV Host Shelley Craft’s Byron Bay Family Home

When it came time to build their sprawling family home in Byron Bay, well known TV host Shelley Craft wanted to pay homage to the coastal town’s industrial roots selecting materials and a design to ensure this home was so much more personalised than the classic Australian beach house.

Located right across from the beach, the family began building their “forever home” in February last year, a single-level house spanning five bedrooms and four bathrooms.

“So, I have to say that this is the best work that I’ve ever done,” Shelley Craft told Affordable Decorators.

“My husband, myself, my two girls, and our builder, you know we’re all delighted… we’re all thrilled. We were so particular about every element that came into this house, and every fixture that was used.”

Craft says the design concept for her Byron Bay abode came from the home’s location, the site of an old Whaling station which operated from 1954 -1962.

“And although that’s a bit of a gruesome history, I really wanted to pay homage to that in our design, so it’s a little bit industrial but it does have a modernist edge to it,” she says.

“We’ve tried to use materials that could have been part of the original Whaling station here, and then when it came to the fit out from the bench tops right through to the curtains, it was all about texture for me, and keeping those earthy colours.”

“We’ve gone for a really earthy aesthetic, and the curtains certainly add another layer to that element,” Shelley said.

A household name with more than 20 years of working in television, Shelley is one of Australia’s most accomplished lifestyle presenters on shows including Australia’s Funniest Home Videos and co-host of TV Ratings smash, The Block.

Shelley’s also a veteran home renovator, so when it came time to put the important finishing details and furnishings on her own family home, she personally appointed Gold Coast based Affordable Decorators.

“Oh my god, I was so thrilled to find Affordable Decorators I cannot tell you,” Craft says.

“I struggled with the curtains, and the Affordable Decorators team came in, they brought so many samples for me to have a look at, I sort of knew what I was going for but until I could touch it and feel it and see it in the home, so that home visit was vital to us choosing the right products for this place.”

When it comes to the curtains and window treatments, Shelley describes this step of the process as “such a big decision”.

“Because it is the last element that comes into your home and you have to be happy, and right down to the colour of the rods, the feel of the curtains and of course that little bit more rustic texture that they have, certainly adds to the finish and the feel of the home,” she says.

Offering Australia’s largest showroom of wallpaper and fabrics, to window treatments, Curtains, Blinds, Shutters and soft furnishings, Affordable Decorators also helped Shelley add a personal touch to the space of her two pre-teen daughters, Milla and Eadie.

“You’ll see in the girls’ room we’ve added this lovely sort of floaty element, which is a little bit removed from the rest of the house, but the girls needed to have some fun in there as well and I think we nailed it,” Shelley says.

“The team at affordable decorators are extraordinary. I knew when I picked something and they looked at me and gave me that knowing nod that we were on, and I think between all of us, we came up with a perfect fit for this place.”

And with her years of experience in transforming a home into your own personalised sanctuary, Shelley’s top design tip?

“Your home really should be an extension of yourself, and I’d like to think this home is exactly that for us. We’re in a calm period of our family life at the moment, my girls are growing up and this house has an amazing sense of calm. I hope everyone feels that when they come inside.”
